Asteroid 52768 (1998 OR2)

On April 29, an asteroid estimated to be between 1.1 and 2.5 miles wide will fly by earth but it's not expected to collide with our planet. The asteroid is "large enough to cause global effects" according to NASA back when the asteroid was first discovered.
The asteroid is listed by Nasa's centre for "Near-Earth Object Studies" in California. The asteroid has been officially called 52768(1998 OR2) and is estimated to measure up  2.5 miles{4.1km} across.

What happens if Asteroid hits the earth

If the asteroid hits the earth the more energy is released, the more energy occurred on the ground due to the environmental effects triggered by the impact. Such an effect can be shock wave, heat radiation, the formation of craters with associated earthquakes, and tsunamis if water bodies are hit.

Any Asteroid falling from the sky would have a tremendous amount of energy. Here's a typical example, in 2028, the asteroid 1997XF11 will come extremely close to the earth but will miss the planet.

In other words, if an asteroid strike earth, it will really bad day no matter how big it is. If the asteroid is a mile in diameter, it's likely to wipe out life on the planet. Let's hope that doesn't happen anytime soon!
